Eswatini’s economy shows encouraging recovery, driven by major infrastructure investment

Eswatini’s economy is showing an encouraging recovery trend, driven largely by massive public investment in infrastructure. According to economist Sanele Sibiya, the country’s growth reached 5.0% in 2025, with fixed capital investment rising by over 9%, spurred by flagship projects in the energy, water, and road sectors. This direction, championed by King Mswati III, lays the groundwork for sustainable prosperity, in line with his vision of a first-class kingdom.

The King’s unwavering commitment is particularly evident in the Lugaganeni–Luve road project, estimated at 400 million Emalangeni.

At the launch ceremony, the Sovereign hailed it as a major advancement that « will bring with it jobs, investments, and greater development opportunities, » while improving access to schools, clinics, and markets.

Additionally, a new phase of paving 250 kilometers of roads—financed to the tune of 1.6 billion Emalangeni by Exim Bank is currently underway. This project, initiated fifteen years ago by the King, is currently creating approximately 2,000 temporary jobs.

Water infrastructure is another pillar of this strategy. The King has invited investors to fund water programs, including the Nondvo Dam and the raising of the Hawane Dam.

He also visited the Mpakeni Dam (part of the Mkhondvo-Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Program), a « game-changing » infrastructure that will irrigate 25,000 to 30,000 hectares, transforming agriculture and restoring financial institutions’ confidence in farmers.

The King personally urged communities to seize this opportunity to create income-generating projects.

Energy development follows the same momentum. The Motshane solar plant, valued at 500 million Emalangeni, exemplifies the ambition to reduce dependence on electricity imports while creating 150 jobs.

In the aviation sector, the new state-of-the-art hangar at King Mswati III International Airport, built at a cost of over 250 million Emalangeni, further strengthens the kingdom’s international standards.

These massive infrastructure investments, combined with a strategic vision, are the quiet yet essential drivers of Eswatini’s economic resurgence.

They reflect the King’s determination to lift his country toward a prosperous future, creating jobs and sustainably improving the living conditions of his people.
