Burkina Faso and Türkiye strengthen strategic ties in the Sahel

Burkina Faso and Türkiye are strengthening their diplomatic relations through discussions on security, defence and economic cooperation. Recent talks in Ankara between Burkinabè diplomat Hermann Yirigouin Toé and Turkish official Volkan Işıkçı highlight efforts to build a stronger bilateral partnership.

Furthermore, the two countries are considering a defence and security agreement. Burkina Faso faces persistent security challenges across the Sahel and seeks greater cooperation to protect its territory. Türkiye could contribute military expertise and technical support to strengthen the country’s security capabilities.

Expanding Regional Cooperation

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso wants the partnership to support the Confederation of Sahel States. By promoting this regional framework, Ouagadougou aims to strengthen its diplomatic influence and encourage international partners to engage with the Sahel’s changing political landscape.

Türkiye could also expand its strategic presence in the region through closer relations with Burkina Faso and other Sahelian countries.

Beyond Security

In addition to defence, the proposed cooperation covers several development sectors, including energy, agriculture and healthcare. Both countries could explore technology transfers and practical mechanisms to improve access to medical assistance.

Ultimately, the partnership reflects Burkina Faso’s efforts to diversify its international relations and strengthen its independence in foreign policy. However, its concrete impact will depend on the agreements reached, the resources committed and the implementation of joint initiatives.

The developing relationship could create new opportunities for cooperation while reinforcing Türkiye’s role as a partner in the Sahel.
