Bahrain–Africa: Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa builds business bridges between the gulf and Africa

Bahrain is strengthening its economic ties with African countries under the leadership of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The Gulf kingdom aims to develop partnerships based on mutual respect, investment and shared economic interests.

First, Egypt is a key partner in this strategy. During the Crown Prince’s official visit to Egypt, Bahrain’s Economic Development Board and Egypt’s investment and free zones authority signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen cooperation. Non-oil trade between the two countries reached $460.5 million in 2024. Egypt was also Bahrain’s sixth-largest export destination.

Meanwhile, Bahrain is expanding its engagement with other African economies. Nigeria and Bahrain issued a joint statement to strengthen trade, investment and diplomatic dialogue. With Morocco, the two countries signed agreements covering industry and commerce. They also committed to reducing trade barriers and encouraging private-sector participation.

Beyond bilateral relations, Manama is engaging with the African Union on shared priorities. These include trade, investment, infrastructure, agriculture, food security and peace.

However, economic exchanges between Bahrain and Africa remain below expectations. This gap offers opportunities for growth. African countries provide natural resources, skilled workers and a young population, while Bahrain brings capital, financial expertise and business knowledge.

Ultimately, stronger Gulf–Africa relations could benefit both sides. African countries would gain access to additional investors and economic partners, while Bahrain could diversify its markets and identify new sources of growth. Continued cooperation will be essential to turn diplomatic commitments into concrete economic results.
