UAE expands maritime partnerships across Africa

The United Arab Emirates is expanding its presence in Africa’s maritime and logistics sectors through investments in major ports and transport infrastructure.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are supporting the development of strategic port facilities across the continent. Through major operators such as DP World, Emirati companies are involved in projects from Dakar and Berbera to Luanda and Maputo.

These investments aim to improve port capacity, strengthen regional logistics and connect African producers to international trade routes. Better infrastructure could also facilitate the movement of agricultural and mineral exports from inland production areas.

The UAE’s approach focuses on direct economic partnerships and investment in physical infrastructure. Its companies are seeking commercial opportunities while working with African governments on port development and logistics projects.

The cooperation also includes operational expertise and technology. Emirati operators are involved in training local workers, introducing digital systems and improving logistics and customs processes.

These initiatives are intended to improve the efficiency of African ports and strengthen their role in international trade. Improved connections between ports, industrial zones and inland markets could also support regional economic activity.

The UAE’s growing involvement reflects the increasing importance of African ports in global trade. By investing in maritime infrastructure, Emirati companies are seeking to expand their role in the continent’s logistics and commercial networks.

For African countries, these partnerships can provide access to capital, technology and port-management expertise while supporting efforts to develop local trade and logistics capacity.
