UAE: Abu Dhabi development fund expands its infrastructure role in Africa

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) is strengthening its role in Africa through targeted investments in major transport infrastructure projects.

Across Togo, Madagascar and Nigeria, the Emirati institution is supporting road construction and rehabilitation projects designed to improve connectivity and economic activity.

In Togo, the 62-kilometre Sokodé-Bassar road rehabilitation project is about 92% complete. The ADFD provided around 37 million dirhams for the project. The work also includes drainage systems and measures to protect the road from heavy rain and flooding.

The road is an important link between Lomé, northern Togo and neighboring countries. Its rehabilitation is expected to reduce transport costs, improve travel conditions and strengthen road safety.

In Madagascar, the ADFD is financing another major transport project. The initiative covers 117 kilometres of dual carriageway and includes the construction of seven bridges. Around 80% of the work has been completed.

The project received more than 110 million dirhams through a concessional loan. It aims to improve access to rural areas while supporting agriculture, industry and tourism. Better roads are also expected to facilitate access to healthcare and other essential services.

In Nigeria, the Minna-Bida Road project represents the ADFD’s first investment in the country. The 82-kilometre route has reached 45% completion and received 165 million dirhams in funding.

Once completed, the project is expected to cut travel time between Minna and Bida by about 50%. It could also reduce vehicle operating costs by approximately 31%.

Beyond financing, the ADFD places emphasis on monitoring projects throughout their implementation. Director General Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi said regular field supervision helps identify developments and improve project preparation.

Through these investments, the fund is supporting transport networks that can improve regional connectivity and economic activity across Africa.
