Nigeria: Tinubu highlights economic reforms ahead of 2027 presidential election

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is putting his economic record at the centre of his message as the country prepares for the 2027 presidential election.

In a national address on October 1, Tinubu said the economy was showing signs of recovery. He reported growth of more than 4% in 2026, with both oil and non-oil activities contributing to the expansion. He also pointed to lower inflation, reduced oil theft and improved foreign-exchange stability.

Since taking office in 2023, Tinubu has implemented major economic reforms. His government removed the fuel subsidy and changed the foreign-exchange system. The measures were intended to correct long-standing economic problems but also contributed to higher living costs and pressure on household incomes.

Tinubu now argues that the difficult phase of the reforms is giving way to a new focus on economic growth and wider prosperity.

He said the next stage should produce practical improvements for Nigerians. These include safer farming conditions, more reliable electricity, easier access to credit and greater employment opportunities for young people.

The president also placed strong emphasis on agriculture and industrial development. His administration plans to expand irrigation, mechanization, infrastructure, storage and transport to reduce production and distribution costs.

However, many Nigerians continue to face economic difficulties. Food and transport costs remain important concerns, while unemployment and insecurity continue to affect communities.

Security is another major challenge. Kidnappings and violent attacks have remained a concern in several parts of the country.

Tinubu is seeking a second term in the January 16, 2027 presidential election. The campaign is expected to focus heavily on the economic impact of his reforms and the conditions facing Nigerian households.
