A high-level meeting was held in Nairobi, Kenya, between a delegation from the National Unity Government and Mr. Lawrence Korbandi, the IGAD representative to the Committee of Five Mediation Bodies. The meeting aimed to review the latest developments in the Sudanese crisis, explore possible paths towards a political solution, and assess the results of the Committee’s recent activities.
Foreign Minister Ammar Amum, accompanied by Dr. Alaa El-Din Awad Naqd, discussed with Mr. Korbandi an assessment of the latest round of talks and the differences of opinion within the Committee of Five Mediation Bodies. Mr. Korbandi provided a detailed account of the Committee’s recent visit to Sudan and its meetings with various stakeholders. He emphasized that the main objective of these efforts is to establish direct dialogue with all segments of the Sudanese population across the country.
The National Unity Government reaffirmed its commitment to a comprehensive and democratic solution. Foreign Minister Ammar Amum welcomed the efforts of IGAD and the Committee of Five Groups, while expressing the reservations of the National Unity Government and the Sudanese Founding Alliance regarding unilateral and superficial initiatives. He argued that such initiatives provide no genuine guarantees of political participation and fail to address the root causes of the conflict.
Finally, he stressed that any successful political process requires complete impartiality from mediators and equal treatment of all parties to the conflict, as well as all regions of Sudan.
