In Niger, General Abdourahamane Tiani has carried out a major reshuffle within the country’s military leadership. The move comes just two weeks after a mutiny tested the military regime’s grip on power in Niamey.
The authorities were recently confronted with a mutiny involving soldiers in the capital. During the unrest, fighting was reported around several strategic sites, including areas near the presidency, the international airport and a military base.
Against this backdrop, General Kiaou, who previously served as army chief of staff, has been assigned new responsibilities. He replaces General Moussa Salaou Barmou, who had held the position since the military seized power in July 2023.
Meanwhile, both officers had been appointed to senior military positions following the coup that brought the military junta to power. However, the authorities have not explained the reasons behind General Barmou’s replacement.
More broadly, the reshuffle comes as the authorities in Niamey seek to strengthen their control over the security apparatus. The move also highlights persistent tensions within Niger’s armed forces.
Ultimately, the changes at the top of the military hierarchy reflect the regime’s efforts to reinforce its command structure. They also come at a sensitive time, as the authorities face internal security challenges and seek to maintain stability within the armed forces.
