Moroccan authorities have broken their silence through a statement from the Foreign Ministry. For several days, Morocco has faced growing criticism over its handling of the crisis. The pressure intensified after a Spanish police report was leaked.
The document refers to what it describes as the “permissiveness” of Moroccan security forces during the crisis.
Meanwhile, Spain’s right-wing People’s Party has accused Morocco of launching a “hybrid attack” against Spain. In response, the Moroccan Foreign Ministry issued a statement aimed at clarifying Rabat’s position.
First, the ministry stressed Morocco’s commitment to maintaining “good-neighborly relations” with Spain. It also highlighted the two countries’ close cooperation in areas such as trade, investment and security.
After years of strained relations, ties between Madrid and Rabat have improved significantly since 2022. This change followed Spain’s decision to support Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara.
However, tensions have increased again since the Ceuta crisis. Against this backdrop, the Moroccan Foreign Ministry questioned why criticism of the kingdom continues. It argued that no evidence or official report has established the involvement of Moroccan authorities.
Furthermore, Rabat accused some Spanish political parties of engaging in what it described as “populist escalation.” The Moroccan government believes the issue is increasingly being used for domestic political purposes in Spain.
Finally, the ministry made its position clear. Morocco, it said, refuses to become a political tool or an “electoral business” ahead of Spanish elections
