Togo: Government pushes for greater national economic independence

The Togolese government is strengthening its economic strategy to support national production and reduce financial barriers. The move was highlighted in Lomé during the third annual meeting of the National Credit Council on September 17, 2026.

First, agriculture remains a major focus of the government’s economic policy. During the first half of 2026, banks provided 15.4 billion CFA francs in agricultural loans. This compares with 8.4 billion CFA francs during the same period in 2025.

Meanwhile, cotton remains an important part of agricultural financing. However, the government is also calling for greater crop diversification across the country. Financial mechanisms such as ProMAT and ProMIFA are designed to reduce risks for banks and support agricultural investment.

In addition, the government is paying greater attention to very small, small and medium-sized businesses. These companies represent more than 90% of the country’s businesses. They also account for around 40% of national wealth and 60% of employment.

Furthermore, the Finance Ministry is seeking financial solutions that better match the needs of these businesses. The approach also involves closer cooperation with the agency responsible for developing small and medium-sized enterprises.

Finally, the strategy aims to strengthen links between financial institutions and the real economy. By encouraging banks to finance agriculture and local businesses, the government seeks to support production, employment and long-term economic growth.
