Tensions are mounting in Yemen as Houthi rebels seize Perim Island, a strategic position in the Bab Al-Mandab Strait. The takeover gives the group a stronger foothold along one of the region’s most important maritime routes.
The move comes at a time of renewed fighting and growing regional tensions. It also raises fresh concerns about the security of international shipping through the Red Sea.
The takeover comes after the group captured the port city of Mokha, about 70 kilometres north of the strait. Saudi Arabia has reportedly carried out two strikes on Mokha airport.
Meanwhile, fighting has intensified in Yemen after months of relative calm. The conflict has already killed hundreds of people, mainly combatants, and displaced nearly 46,000 others, according to the International Organization for Migration.
The Houthis have also targeted Saudi oil tankers and infrastructure. However, they deny plans to completely close the Bab Al-Mandab Strait or impose transit fees.
The latest developments could further threaten maritime security along this vital international shipping route.
